Wandering 'Round Remington: R. House and Greedy Reads

A few miles south of Loyola's campus, the neighborhood of Remington offers a vibrant social scene unparalleled in its local arts and music. At the corner of W 29th and Fox St., you'll find one of my favorite hidden gems: Greedy Reads.

I refer to it as a "hidden gem" because the shop is quite literally tucked away on the side of a large, brick building. Keep an eye out for the bright green paint—a sure-fire way to know your'e on the right track! Founded by book lover and retired publisher Julia Fleischaker, Greedy Reads opened this second location in Remington just one year after its initial success in Fells Point.

The interior is oh-so charming; colorful posters, potted plants, and cozy cushions occupy almost every corner. Stocked with a wide variety of titles, patrons will find everything from popular releases to indie authors. I am especially fond of the 'Baltimore Books' display: a table promoting local travel guides, history, photography, and more. But my favorite part of any independent bookstore is not its reading selection; Greedy Reads has a great selection of trinkets and tchotchkes. I've found the most adorable stickers, bookmarks, games, and stuffed animals.

If you are like me, book browsing tends to work up quite an appetite. After buying a new book (or three), I like to head across the street for lunch at R. House, an auto body shop turned "industrial-chic" food court.

Established by a group of aspiring chefs, R. House has become a staple in the Baltimore community for internationally-inspired cuisine. Like Baltimore's many neighborhoods and districts, R. House caters to a number of different communities and cultures. Are you in the mood for seafood gumbo and fried catfish, some southern-inspired soul food? Or maybe some authentic street tacos and cheesy empanadas? R. House really does have it all.

This afternoon, I was craving a Classic Bianco from Molina Pizza. Their creamy, garlic cheese pizza is delicious, especially when topped with fresh arugula and a balsamic gaze. Molina is a bit on the pricier side for personal pies, but with so many options to customize, I have discovered so many tasty flavor combos.

Reading and eating go together like PB&J. Next time you are passing through the neighborhood, be sure to stop by Greedy Reads and R. House for a picture-perfect afternoon!
